Embarrassed by your child's behavior?

Embarrassed by your child's behavior?

I was talking with a client over over zoom a while ago and one of her children could be heard in the background shouting. She was embarrassed and incredibly apologetic.

I told her you’re talking to another mum! I get it. You don’t need to explain! My kids certainly have done the same. Kids do that sometimes.

It hit me how as parents we are always so apologetic for the behaviour of our children because we are embarrassed.

I’ll tell you something maybe I shouldn’t, but I want to be real with you here…

Mums Unstuck membership

Mums Unstuck membership for Muslim mums

I am beyond excited to share with you the doors to Mums Unstuck are finally open Alhamdulillah!

If you've been following me around on social media over the past few weeks you'll already know what this is all about. For those who haven't yet heard, let me fill you in.

Mums Unstuck is the first of its kind parenting membership subscription like no other! It's for Muslim mums who want to take their parenting skills and personal growth to the next level, insha'Allah.

They say it takes a village to raise a child...well I say it takes said village to support that mum in raising both her child and herself! Mums Unstuck will be that village for us all, bi'ithnillah.

Every month we're going to dive in deep to the issues that are going to help you raise your parenting game and feel confident about yourself as a mother insha'Allah.

We'll explore topics you might expect from a parenting membership such as confident parenting, boosting connections, overcoming tantrums, handling sibling rivalry and positive discipline. And more that you might not expect, such as how to coach teens through exams or how to encourage your children to adopt a growth mindset and reach their best potential, bi'ithnillah.

Mums Unstuck Is As Much About YOU As It Is Your Parenting

This is a membership that offers so much more than just parent skill development. It is a monthly journey to unravel the relationship you have with yourself and your own goals and aspirations beyond motherhood.

I hear from mums all the time who feel stuck. They want more for themselves and their children but are not sure what to do. They wouldn't change being a mother for anything, but somewhere along the way have got a little lost and forgotten who they are.

Mums Unstuck is for Muslim women who want to develop their parenting skills and know-how alongside doing the inner work on their own growth outside of being a mum. It is a parenting membership that understands how you feel about yourself as an individual massively impacts how you parent because when you grow, your children grow too.

You see it doesn't matter how many amazing things you and your children do and it doesn't matter how many great parenting strategies you might use, because if you don't feel good about yourself, you simply won't see any of it. You will see the molehill issues and turn them into gigantic mountains that paralyse you.

When you feel good about yourself, you walk different, your talk different, you PARENT different. And it is this difference that impacts your ability to be the amazing mother and role model you want to be.

A major part of Mums Unstuck is this journey of self-discovery, helping you through coaching to uncover your own identity, goals and aspirations outside of your parenting role, because you are more than "just" a mum. You are a servant of Allah, a wife, a daughter, a friend, a sibling and so much more.

Taking responsibility for your education choices....not everyone else's

Education quote

When I started home educating I was young(-ish) and like a lot of others around me, incredibly black and white. We had made the choice to not send our children to school and anyone who did, was doing a disservice to their family.
I look back at those early years now and consider them to be one of my biggest face-palm moments.

Homeschool Unstuck

Homeschool Unstuck a free Q&A for muslim mums

After over a decade working in our fabulous Muslim homeschool community, answering questions and lending out advice, I’ve noticed something. The vast majority of those questions and challenges are the same. It doesn’t matter where we live in the world or what our cultural background may be, the crux of our difficulties, anxieties and concerns are incredibly similar.

I wanted to do something more than just offer a few lines of advice in a social media reply, and have produced several free ebooks in an attempt to help provide some support and direction. However, I know that’s not enough. I want to do more. Sometimes you need to physically hear that advice and guidance instead of just reading it. Sometimes the spoken word has a more significant impact because the human voice brings about connection. There is something about hearing a voice that offers a greater sense of understanding.

Temporary School-At-Home During The Coronavirus Outbreak

advice for covid 19 school at home mums

All the parents who are finding themselves thrust into a sudden school-at-homer position, my heart goes out to you. You are in a difficult position caught somewhere between school and home education.
What you are doing isn’t home educating or homeschooling. Rather what you are doing is school-at-home which is something entirely different…and something most home educators run away from and advise against because we know it brings tears, stress and overwhelm.

I’m not here to tell you what you should or shouldn’t be doing. I know many of your schools are providing you with homework assignments for your children that you’ll be expected to carry out.
But what I do want to say, is if you want to find success during this turbulent period and keep all your hair in tact, you have to let go of school expectations for your family. You have to start rethinking how you see education through the lens of your home, rather than through the lens of school.
This is a period that if you are to embrace could provide your family with no end of benefits; far beyond just the academic expectations.

Surviving School-At-Home

free online workshop for Muslim mums surviving school-at-home following the coronavirus school closures

With many mums across the UK and around the world finding themselves suddenly thrown into a schooler-at-home position, I want to offer a little guidance to help you settle and adapt to this new role you have been thrust into insha’Allah.

Whilst many of you have been provided with work to carry out at home, it is not an easy task implementing what is meant for school within the home as a parent; because your home simply is not a school and nor is it meant to be.

I want to offer some gentle guidance to show you how you can help unite the demands of school within your home without tearing your hair out insha’Allah!

This time we are facing is one of unease and I want to help lessen the burden and anxiety many mums are feeling during this time.

Next Sunday 29th March at 7:30pm UK time (BST) I invite you to join me for a FREE online workshop designed to help you navigate this unexpected situation insha’Allah.
The replay will be available for 24 hours only.

Advice for the Muslim Homeschooler eBook gift

free eBook to help Muslim homeschoolers

After first publishing Advice for the Muslim Homeschooler in 2017, I've updated it for 2020 making it bigger and better - and yes it is still free to download! It has truly been a labor of love putting this together.

If you're not a home educating mumma, I think there is still lots in here that you too will find benefit in and resonate with insha'Allah, so don't be deterred by the title. Whilst I passionately offer this to help home educating sisters build their confidence and find support, much of what I share is from the perspective of being a mother that anyone will relate to.

How can we teach our children Islamic Studies at home?

Teaching children Islamic Studies from home

Something I see mummas everywhere always wanting help on, is how to teach Islam at home with family.
This topic was raised by an attendee in my Homeschooling With Confidence course, and I thought it would be beneficial to share my (edited and updated) response here with you too, since it is such a common quest so many of us have.

Certainly it has always been something that I’ve been conscious of. Islam is the central part of our lives and we want to raise our children to love our religion and more than that, act upon it; knowing it is Allah Alone who guides.

My advice here is that of a fellow mum just like you. I am not a student of knowledge rather I have to be clear that I’m a layman, so I will always refer you to the people of knowledge because it is beyond my expertise to instruct you in Islamic matters. So please know that what I am offering here is merely general advice from one mother to another in dealing with children and teaching them Islam at home.

What do to when your husband doesn't want to homeschool

Find out what to do when your husband doesn't want to home educate

I have heard this question from sisters; and certainly more than once. You want to home educate, but dear hubby doesn't, so what should you do?

My goal here is to help you get the individual answers that YOU need...not merely provide a set of generic pieces of advice and hope they will fit.

And so at the end of this post I've provided a free homeschool coaching page where I turn questions back onto you; helping you discover what it is that you personally need to do in your own unique situation bi'ithnillah.

Sibling Rivalry - what to do when kids won't stop fighting

sibling rivalry - what to do when kids won't stop fighting

Recently I ran a pole over on Instagram, asking if your children ever fight, bicker and squabble. A whopping 82% of you answered "all the time".

This is what I know....when your children are at each others throats, it always seems like they are the only children in the world who don’t seem to be able to get on.

It can also feel at times that they seem to hate each other, which is heart breaking to see.

Firstly let me assure you that your children truly are not the only ones in the world who are always bickering (I personally attest to that!). Secondly, they don’t hate each other - even if it might seem so at the time.

Parenting; from survive to thrive

Parenting hacks - using the chaos to build character

Some days you wake up, and there is only one thing on your mind: survival. Your goal is simply to get through the day; feed everyone, end the sibling conflicts without anyone loosing an eye, and hope that at least some maths gets done. Survive.

Deep rooted in amongst all the chaos, we know that there is more to this homeschooling life than just survival. None of us are home educating so our family can just merely survive. We want everyone to thrive.

Should I help my child do homework?

How to kids with homework - is it okay?

There is a consensus that when it comes to homework, this is something which a child should be left alone with unless they really need help. And certainly it should never be done for them.

When I think back to my own school days, I notice that the kids who tended to be at the top of the class and well-liked by the teachers, generally seemed to be the kids who had parents (whether one or two) at home supporting them through their education. They didn't just leave it to the teachers.

Our own mobile phone addiction is destroying our kids

Keeping young children away from the dangers of the mobile (cell) phone

I was asked recently how can we keep our young children away from mobile phones and other electronic gadgets?

You might not like my answer.

Don't use them.

I've seen too many mothers handing their young child a mobile phone to keep them quiet at the masjid, to get them to eat or when they are busy and need the kids to be quiet.

Our children wouldn't have quite the intense reaction they do around these mobile appliances in the first place if we didn't use them as a pacifier to hush or entertain them...and....

….if they didn't see us with them in hand so often.

We have a big part to play in this, because many of us ourselves are addicted to our phones.

Yes, addicted and often in denial.

How to homeschool your preschooler: your questions answered with a free ebook

how to homeschool muslim preschool

Following my last post on how to homeschool a two year old, I said I'd answer some of your questions that were sent to me through Instagram, relating to home-schooling your preschool aged child. I've gone ahead and converted my answers into a free pdf ebook to make it super easy to pick up and flick through.

Much of my advice stems off the principle that pre-schoolers pretty much don't need homeschooling any more than a preschooler needs school. What they do need parenting.

They need you dear Mama, not a homeschool teacher.

How to start homeschooling a 2 year old

How to start homeschooling a 2 year old - advice from a Muslim Homeschool

One of the most common questions I receive, is asking how to homeschool a two year old. I don't know why age two seems to bring about so many questions, but it does because so many of you ask me about yours!

Rather than constantly rewriting the same suggestions in a briefly summarised Instagram or Facebook message, touch-typed through my mobile phone, I figured it would be useful to have a post ready-to-go answering this question.

Increase your productivity and get more done with a morning priority plan

boost productivity with a priority plan

There never seems to be enough hours in the day. From the time we wake up in the morning until the time we lay our heads back down upon our pillows, there always seems to be something we need to do...or something we haven't done.
Although a struggle many of us can all relate to, not everyone does. There are some who seem to jump straight onto the productivity train leaving the rest of us lagging far behind at the procrastination station.
So what is so different about them? And more importantly, what can you and I do as mothers, to get the same inshaAllah?

You are your child's role model for success

muslim parenting - you are the role model

You are the role model for success or failure. Sounds pretty intimidating.
But the fact is that we as a Muslim parent (regardless of whether or not we choose to home educate) are our children's role model.

The most important thing when it comes to Muslim parenting, is wanting to please Allah. To raise our children to know and act upon the reason they were created; to worship the One Who Created us Alone with no partner.

So it goes without saying, that we must show through our actions and words what this means to us in our own life.

Embracing Motherhood

Muslim mum / Mom encouragement

My fellow Mama and comrade, my dear sister, we have been given one of the greatest tasks; to raise and nurture our children to know and act upon the purpose for which we were all created. And there is no escaping this obligation, no matter how we choose to educate our family; whether we homeschool or not.

This responsibility is more than merely the upbringing of our own family. Rather, this upbringing will have an effect on the greater society in which we live, for generations to come.

Dear homeschool Mama, we're all just like you

Dear Muslim Home schooling Mom, this Mama is just like you
The purpose of this blog, like my Instagram and Facebook pages, is to help my sisters with ideas, support and advice.

Not because I have all the answers...
Because I don't.

I'm like you.
With the same struggles.
The same problems.
The same worries.
The same doubts.
The same questions.
The same dirty dishes, piled up laundry and burnt food.
