Place value numbers 10-19....colouring fun!

Please raise your hand if you have a child who sees the number 14, but reads it as 41, or a 13 which comes out as 31, or a 19 which she will tell you is 91!
In my latest attempt to win this battle, I've put together a simple colouring activity, which (hopefully) demonstrates the place values for the tens and units, by inserting the manipulatives inside each digit

Printable Place Value Houses with mini white board!

Making your own resources is way cheaper and I think far more likely to be used by both you as a parent / teacher and your student, because it was made with love!

 

I was looking online to find something to help my kiddos understand place value as well as be able to read off huge numbers. (something I have to admit I myself struggled doing until I made this...my head hangs in shame!)



 

I had a rough idea that I wanted to incorporate the house idea to teach the place value concept (you know, every value has its own "house" where it lives and doesn't move) but I also wanted something which could be actively used to help with their maths learning.

 

That's where the idea came to add laminated white paper to make a dry-erase space / tiny white-board Alhamdulillah!

This dry-erase area allows you to be able to write in any number from 1 to 999million as many times as you need. It makes it clear to see what value each digit represents and makes it easier to practice how to say the bigger numbers where it can get quite confusing!

 

 

The great thing is, you can fold the houses back to just show a particular "house" - so when just starting out learning place value, typically children begin with the hundreds, tens and ones. - so you don't have to use or show the whole "street" at once!

 

To assemble this resource all you do once printed is cut out the houses and glue together to form your street. Laminate the mini white board template (included in the file) and cut out before sticking in place on your houses.

That's it!

 

We stored it inside a pocket in our interactive maths note book alongside a small cut and stick worksheet I used to re-introduce place value before we had made this.

Counting and place value mini-office!

I find that homeschoolers over in the USA are several steps ahead of us here in the UK (or maybe they just blog more than us!?)

 I don't internet surf as much as I used to when I started out home-edding 3 years ago, but yesterday I was doing just that.

 Checking out some American homeschooling blogs, and I stumbled across something called "mini offices".
Maybe everyone else knows about these mini-offices and I am the last to pick up on it....whatever the case, I think they are awesome Alhamdulillah, and are great for school kids to give help with homework as well as home-schoolers!!

For those of you who like me, are new to this world of mini-offices, basically, its a resource which your students can use that is packed full of useful information about a particular topic or subject.

So for example, you might have a literacy mini-office that will include points to remember when writing.....constructing sentences, paragraphs, grammar etc etc.

These mini-offices can be ready assembled for your children as a resource or perhaps for older kids, they could make their own!

I know how easy it is to spend money of resources which are overpriced and mostly, are hardly even used! Something like this is great, because you can cheaply pull together the fundamentals of any given topic and throw them together in this kind of format, and it won't even take a lot of space to store away when not in use!

To get us started, I have put together a very simple counting and place value mini-office that can be used to help our numeracy lessons inshaAllah.

 

As this is my first attempt at a mini-office, I am giving this one away as a free download Alhamdulillah!

 

It includes:

Counting in 2's to 100's, a hundred square, ordering and place value explained.

Its entirely up to you how you want to put it together - file folders would be great for this.

 What I did was tape together 3 sheets of blue A4 card (to produce a tri-fold stand) added a darker blue paper, before cutting out the information pieces and sticking on top.

To prevent wrinkles, I printed onto thin white card (45 sheets from one of the pound stores) and stuck all the layers together using double sided tape.  

 

You don't have to do what I did, you can of course just print out onto card and not cut out the individual elements, instead just taping each A4 printed sheet straight together down the sides to have your tri-fold office, or like I said a file-folder would be ideal and less time-consuming to assemble!

 I just like to make things a little extra cute!

 

Place value addition

To help practise place value, a small worksheet using place value and addition (no carrying over). The sheets are ready to print on A4 landscape, double sided so that it can be folded into a mini book. (or if preferred just use as standard worksheets)

Can be used alongside Montessori and Base Ten unit material to help work out answers.

Inshallah further addition using carrying over will be uploaded in the near future, as well as subtraction.

Written numbers in word form....Montessori style!

This is quite a nice lesson to help give an understanding of numbers in words, as well as understanding decimal place.

Some time ago I printed from Montessori Print Shop place value cards for the Golden Beads. These are cards which come in sets of 3, depicting a value in its number form, written word form and an image showing the beads representing that amount.

For anyone who doesn't use the Montessori beads, these could easily be substituted for something similar such as base ten blocks, and you can find websites to print the large number cards I'm sure for free.

Anyway, here is what we did.....

1.) I gave K the value card in words.

2.) K then brought the corresponding bead material.

3.) I gave K the picture card to check she was correct.

4.) I then asked K to bring the correct value number cards...........

...........which she had to put together to show the correct number

5.) Finally, I gave K the number card so she could check she was correct.
