30 Hadeeth on Raising children!

30 Hadeeth on Raising Children - Advice for Parents and Educators
A beneficial 6 part audio series from Moosaa Richardson, discussing 30 ahadeeth on raising children; an advise for both parents and educators.

Raising our children is something which is such a huge responsibility; and this short series provides an insight into just how important it is that we take this role.

If you find it difficult to sit and listen to the daroos of the Ulema (Scholars) or talibul-ilm (students of knowledge), then try playing such audio lessons to listen to as you cook or do your household chores.

Listening to audios as you work makes your time far more beneficial and productive, as well as making daily tasks far more enjoyable.

You can find all 6 lessons over on the Troid website. (click on the highlighted text to be taken over there)

The rights of children in Islam....

Quote from the publisher's introduction regarding this book (available as a free online PDF):

Although small in size, this booklet presents the reader with a valuable discussion on some of the rights and privileges of children, which parents are obligated to fulfil. Indeed, it is not only the children who will be asked concerning their behaviour towards their parents on the Day of Judgement but also the parents will be asked concerning their children and how they raised them. Therefore, we must know the rights of our children and strive to fulfil our duties towards them so that they in turn may serve as righteous deeds for us and benefit us after we die.

Home school class room Vs the kitchen table!

home school classroom

To have a home school class room, or to not have a home school class room? Which is best and does it even really matter?

Take a look on pinterest and you will find an array of beautiful homeschool classrooms....huge rooms with everything a teacher-mum and her kids would ever need....to have a dedicated room like that you really would feel like a professional home schooler right!

But is it really necessary? If you don't have a home school room, does it make you less of a home-schooler?

When we started out home educating, we "home Schooled" around the kitchen table, with kids work up on the kitchen wall.
About 18 months later, we turned a spare bedroom into a "class room" which I loved, because it was a place to store all the "school stuff" out of the way, although it sometimes seemed a bit of an effort to go in there; being segregated from the rest of the house, and would often end up bringing work to the kitchen table so we could school and cook dinner at the same time!
Go forward another 18 months, and the classroom is being dismantled as we need the space for something else, and I am in the middle of trying to find new homes around the house for all its contents we have built up over this short time subhanAllah.

home school classrooms
So does it make a difference having a class room? I don't think so. Sure, it is nice to have everything in one place, and if you are blessed to have an extra room then why not? But it really isn't essential. Having a classroom won't actually be the ticket to give you better educational results...no matter what pinterest may make you think!

What is important, is nurturing the innate curiosity of your children, and giving them a space where they can be comfortable, happy and have access to everything they need to learn and be inspired....whether that be a dedicated school room or a seat at the kitchen table!

This can be done in so many ways, and every family is different. If you do a different search on pinterest, you can also find an array of different home schooling families utilising spaces in different ways; the famous kitchen table, the living room floor, desks in the bedrooms, unsuspecting cupboards intended to store plates and cups instead filled with papers and books - whatever space people have is what is used Alhamdulillah....and it all works fine!

At the end of the day, the place you are "schooling" in, is your home....albeit a temporary one; as we travel through this world like a stranger, working to put forward provisions for our permanent abode in the akhira.

So what is the simple answer to our class room question? Whatever works for you and your family's needs and requirements.

Just keep in mind, that material is not what is important and is not what will give you and your children true success. But what you do and how you use what you do have, is what will.

Learning Arabic is fun!

learning Arabic is fun
I will no longer be posting Arabic language material on this blog - instead all new content will be posted onto a new blog site http://www.learningarabicisfun.com/ bi'ithnillah!

Learning Arabic is something which is of upmost importance to the Muslims. It is the key to unlocking the Qur'an and indeed the Sunnah!

So many of us in the West try to learn the language, but very few of us reach true success. If we really want to speak the language of the Muslims, we must realise that we have to immediately put into practice what we learn; failing to do so means that Arabic will remain just a theoretical list of words which we don't know how to use.

I've started the new blog, to help my own family's quest in learning Arabic bi'ithnillah. Through it, I hope to share beneficial learning resources I have found online as well as those I make myself.
My hope is that it will serve as a motivator to both myself and others, to keep on pushing forward; to not just learn Arabic, but implement and speak it with full understanding inshaAllah.

The blog content will be divided into 3 main categories:
1) stuff for adults;
2) stuff for kids
3) stuff for parents

Certainly true success is only from Allah. I ask Allah to make this effort something which will benefit myself, and the Muslim community.

Printable time line with both Hijri and Gregorian calendar dates

printable time line with hijri and gregorian calendar dates

Have you ever wondered who lived first; the Maya or the Aztecs? Do you know what was happening in England and America at the same time as the Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم was born? What about the rights of women throughout different parts of both the Muslim and non-Muslim world 100 years ago...?

Time lines are an awesome way to compare and visualise the chronological order of historical events and people throughout the ages; making it easy to answer these questions!

If you search the internet you can find plenty of ready to print time-lines both on sale and free....however finding one which incorporates the Hijri calendar is difficult if not impossible!

As Muslims, the Hijri calendar is something which is of great importance to us - yet sadly, it is often neglected in favour of the Gregorian calendar which most of us living here in the West are more familiar with. Many of us don't have any comprehension of the Hijri dates .... if we ask ourselves what is today's Hijri date; do we know it? ....Let alone asking what was happening in the world 200 years ago according to the Hijri calendar!

Alhamdulillah, with the help of online date converters, we have produced a 31 page time line with dates from both the Gregorian and Hijri calendars, beginning at 5795BH / 5000 BCE up to 1441 AH / 2020CE - allowing you to map out the events of world history in the Muslim and non-Muslim world side by side!

The dates are marked using BCE (Before Common Era) and CE (common Era) as opposed to the Christian based designations of BC (Before Christ) and AD (standing for the Latin phrase anno domini meaning in the year of our Lord).

The pages are blank, allowing you to add information according to your own studies, be that through writing or pictures.
It will be interesting to be able to see and analyse events and lifestyles during the same periods across the globe - specifically in comparison to Islamic events during the same eras.

If you line up the pages side by side to tape them together at the back, forming a huge long line of sheets; you can then fold it concertina style (like a fan) giving you a time-line book you can flick through, picking out specific historical periods......or.....

printable time line with hijri and gregorian calendar dates

....open it out and spread across the floor! (if you have enough space!!!!!)

printable time line with hijri and gregorian calendar dates

Add information to your time line as you study and learn new historical facts! You can write your information as well as include inanimate(*) drawings or images of relevance.
Be careful not to allow your children to draw images of people / animals but focus instead on landscapes, buildings, clothing etc. (see footnote below).

To download and print, just click onto the high lighted text below!

Footnote:
* It is not permissible for the Muslim to draw pictures of animate (living) beings.

Narrated Muslim: We were with Masruq at the house of Yasar bin Numair. Masruq saw some images (or pictures etc) on his terrace and said, "I heard 'Abdullah saying that he heard the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم saying: "The people who will receive the severest punishment from Allah will be the picture-makers."
Sahih Al-Bukhari #5951

Narrated 'Aisha: The Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم  never used to leave in the house anything carrying images or crosses but he obliterated it.
Sahih Al-Bukhari #5952

Narrated Abu Zur'a: I entered a house in al-Madina with Abu Hurairah, and he saw a man making pictures at the top of the house. Abu Hurairah said, "I heard Allah's Messenger صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم  saying that Allah said: "Who would be more unjust than the one who tries to create the like of My creatures? Let them create a grain; let them create a gnat"....
Sahih Al-Bukhari #5953

Narrated Abu Talha: Allah's Messenger صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said: "Angels (of Mercy) do not enter a house where there are pictures."......
Sahih Al-Bukhari #5958

Narrated Salim's father: Once Jibril promised to visit the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم  but he delayed and the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم  got worried about that. At least he came out and found Jibril and complained to him of his grief (for his delay). Jibril said to him, "We do not enter a place in which there is a picture or a dog."
Sahih AL-Bukhari #5960

Narrated Sa'id bin Abu Al-Hasan: While I was with Ibn 'Abbas a man came and said, "O father of 'Abbas! I am a human being and my sustenance is from my manual profession and I make these pictures." Ibn 'Abbas said, "I will tell you only what I heard from Allah's Messenger صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم . I heard him saying, "Whoever makes a picture will be punished by Allah till he pits a soul (life) in it, and he will never be able to put soul (life) in it." Hearing this, that man heaved a sigh and his face turned pale. Ibn 'Abbas said to him, "What a pity! If you inist on making pictures I advise you to make pictures of trees and any other inanimated objects having no souls."
Sahih Al-Bukhari #2225

free blank note booking pages

free blank note booking pages
I began making this file a few months ago with the goal to produce a note-booking pages set to include 100 different designs; in order to sell on the blog.
But as I go along I realise I am a huge softy because I always feel bad selling things I make! Instead I decided to make a smaller file however make it available as a free download inshaAllah.

So here we have a blank note-booking page set with 23 designs, each design with 4 different layouts.
Each design pretty much has a tittle page and 3 additional sheets with space provided for both text and images.

Plural Rules: Free printables for interactive note books!

plural rules printable worksheets for interactive note books
We've started an interactive notebook for our grammar studies. I think of it as a cross between an on-going lapbook contained within a note-book and a self-made text book.

The goal I have; is to produce something hands-on to understand Grammar, which can be used to reference back to throughout the year inshaAllah.

We are going right back to basics with this covering previously learnt material to ensure understanding is consolidated as new topics are introduced and taught inshaAllah.

In this post I'm sharing our work on plural nouns.
All the printables used can be downloaded at the end of the post.

The first thing we did was go over and explain singular and plural nouns using flaps which are stuck directly onto the page and lifted to show the answer.
plural rules printable worksheets for interactive note books

We then followed by learning the general rules for making singular words plural - something which as adults we do automatically without much thought, but when you really delve into it realise there is a lot to remember and understand!
We made a lift the flap chart to stick into the note-book to help define and show the rules for differently spelt words. On the left side is the word spelling type, and on the left examples.
plural rules printable worksheets for interactive note books

Of course, as with most (non-Islamic) rules, these rules are not true 100% of the time, so we made a small poster page to help get to grips that sometimes these rules just won't apply - and the only way of knowing this is to literally learn how to spell these plurals along with the singular counterparts.
plural rules printable worksheets for interactive note books

The last thing I set up was a pluralised spelling test (with permission to look at the rules chart). I took small rectangular papers and wrote out singular nouns. I folded the end of the paper over so that on top, the plural ending had to be written on. To make a little easier, I did use the same colour paper for each spelling rule.

Grab and go....frozen smoothie packs!

frozen smoothie packs
Green smoothies are a great way to get fresh leafy greens into you and if you mix them up with sweet fruits, you won't even know you are drinking spinach!

But it can get a little tedious preparing smoothies with all the peeling and chopping going on every time you want one.

I was introduced to the idea of frozen smoothie packs over on pinterest...but I wasn't convinced.
So, after doing a little research on freezing leafy greens and fruits it seems that yes, freezing does work!

So yesterday I made a whole bunch of packs to put in the freezer and today after completing the taste test challenge, I can report that Alhamdulillah, its great!

I took my pack out the freezer about an hour before I wanted to blitz to allow it to thaw out a little. And what I got was a refreshing cold green smoothie Alhamdulillah!

How easy will this make drinking smoothies through-out the week inshaAllah.....just grab a bag, dump it in the blender with some water and voila! No washing, chopping or juice dripping all over the work tops! An instant breakfast, snack or lunch!

It also helps to keep your fruits and leafy greens fresh....theres nothing worse than having a packet of spinach wilt away before you got to use the whole thing, or berries growing mould in the fridge! By freezing, you are able to lock in the nutriants and stop them spoiling bi'ithnillah.

All you need to do to make these are wash and prepare whatever greens and fruits you want, and distribute them between freezer bags. Press the bags down to squeeze out as much air as you can and seal before storing in the freezer.

If you have a high-speed blender such as a nutribullet you can add nuts and seeds to your smoothie to get additional good fats such as omega 3 in flaxseed, because the blades totally pulverise open the tiny seed shells Alhamdulillah! - But I personally would add these to the blender fresh when you are ready to blend rather than freezing ahead.

If you have any smoothie making tips, I'd love to hear them in the comments section below!

Number squares 1 - 1000 with less than / more than tool!

number sqaures 1 -1000 interactive maths note book

Last week we reviewed number sequence, completing a set of number squares from 1-1000 and made a number finder to use with them to help identify patterns of 1 more / 1 less and 10 more / 10 less.

number sqaures more than / less than number finderThe number finder is simply printed onto card with little flaps cut into it, which allow you to lift up and see 1 and 10 more or less of the selected number in the middle.

Its a great aid to those just learning to identify number patterns and sequence, or those who struggle and need a little help to boost their confidence.

We printed our number squares onto coloured card and then filled in each 100 set over a few days.

I put together a small pocket to store them altogether in our interactive maths note book.
This will allow them to be grabbed when needed inshaAllah.

mumber squares 1 - 1000 interactive maths note bookI'm planning a post about interactive note-books soon inshaAllah, as we have been using them for the past 4 weeks in our Maths and Grammar studies; finding them most helpful Alhamdulillah!

Printable Place Value Houses with mini white board!

Place Value Houses interactive math note book
Making your own resources is way cheaper and I think far more likely to be used by both you as a parent / teacher and your student, because it was made with love!

I was looking online to find something to help my kiddos understand place value as well as be able to read off huge numbers. (something I have to admit I myself struggled doing until I made this...my head hangs in shame!)

I had a rough idea that I wanted to incorporate the house idea to teach the place value concept (you know, every value has its own "house" where it lives and doesn't move) but I also wanted something which could be actively used to help with their maths learning.

That's where the idea came to add laminated white paper to make a dry-erase space / tiny white-board Alhamdulillah!
This dry-erase area allows you to be able to write in any number from 1 to 999million as many times as you need. It makes it clear to see what value each digit represents and makes it easier to practice how to say the bigger numbers where it can get quite confusing!

Place Value Houses interactive math note book

The great thing is, you can fold the houses back to just show a particular "house" - so when just starting out learning place value, typically children begin with the hundreds, tens and ones. - so you don't have to use or show the whole "street" at once!

To assemble this resource all you do once printed is cut out the houses and glue together to form your street. Laminate the mini white board template (included in the file) and cut out before sticking in place on your houses.
That's it!

Place Value Houses interactive math note book
We stored it inside a pocket in our interactive maths note book alongside a small cut and stick worksheet I used to re-introduce place value before we had made this.

Both the worksheet and place value foldable can be downloaded by clicking the high-lighted texts below bi'ithnillah:

How Pinterest can be of use to you

how to use pinterest
Have you ever journeyed into the world of Printerest?
For a long time I'd occasionally come across Pinterest, but I never really understood its purpose....to me it seemed just like doing a search on google images. I couldn't fathom it as anything beyond another image search tool.
Ah how I was wrong!

When I "got it" the penny really did drop! I've been using it now for a few months, so I don't claim to be a pinterest expert, however, I figured I could share how I have found pinterest to be useful to me...and boy is it useful!

But I warn you....be careful...you can get lost in pinterest as you find hours seem like minutes in there!

At its simplest, Pinterest is a virtual pin board. It allows you to store all those great finds you come across online and store those links with an image, saving you a huge amount of space on your computers favourite list and making it way more organised!

So how it works is you make specific categorised boards, and each of these categories appear on a main board.
In the picture below you can see my main board. I've made a number of categorises which when I find something online, I will "pin" (store) to whichever is relevant.
how to use pinterest

Here is my maths board, I'll save any fun ideas to do with learning or teaching maths, projects or printables. Each image is linked to the original webpage so its easy to go back and find full details if you need, or just use the images for inspiration!

Another board I made is to pin home-made toy ideas...

You can make boards for anything you like...home organisation, home made cleaning recipes, Arabic language resources, craft ideas, parenting tips.....what ever you want and need because its completely personal to you!
Search pinterest to find creative fun ideas, or pin directly from websites! You'll never have to clog up your computers favourite list again!

Learning Arabic? ...a few online resources to check out...

arabic resources online, worksheets and printables
Alhamdulillah there are some great Arabic learning resources available online.....here is a small list of a few I have come across.

free arabic curriculum
Some nice printable resources for children to help teaching Arabic - you'll find stories, colouring pages and themed vocabulary curriculum.

madina arabic online
If you are learning the Madina Arabic books, this is a useful site to help you, with audio sounds, and end of chapter quizzes!

madina arabic vocab
A free online resource which helps you to learn the Madina Arabic vocab bi'ithnillah.
-note this site offers courses on virtually anything and everything....so I am not recommending this whole site, rather this particular course.

arabic worksheets for kids
I came across this resource quite recently so I have only skimmed through it - however it looks a great addition to the Madina Arabic Reader books (The Madina Arabic course in a child-friendly version).
It is packed full of extra colourful lessons to help practice the vocab and grammar understanding all presented in a nice simple and colourful format.
I don't know anything about this site, but this particular resource looks hugely beneficial inshaAllah.

arabic prinatable resources
Lots of nice kids learning resources available for your to print at home.

arabic printables
The Taalibideen Jr family of websites offer great education resources!
I think right now the Arabic site is not available I assume for maintenance, but I have linked the Islamic Studies site which has a link to its Arabic sister site in the menu bar so inshaAllah, when its back online it will be easy for you to find.

learn to read arabic free
A huge series of step by step video lessons, which start from learning the alphabet up to rules of reading the Qur'an.
I have included this site in the list, because I know there are many parents who have come to Islam as adults and are learning Arabic inshaAllah.
While this site does not substitute the role of having a real teacher, it is a great help for those who perhaps can not find a teacher easily or want to have extra independent practice.
I don't know who is behind this site and what they are upon, however from what I can see this free resource is just helping you to learn to read the Qur'an with some rules bi'ithnillah.

*13/04/15:
Here are 2 more sites I've come across, but haven't got time to put them into graphic images!

An excellent resource teaching Arabic grammar right from the beginning in a series of easy to follow readable lessons.

This isn't a free site, but I have tried it and it is unlike any other Arabic teaching website. Read my review for full details in this post inshaAllah.

Yummy crunchy granola made at home

Granola recipe
I went in the kitchen today with my 8 year old and we put together this granola recipe Alhamdulillah!

With supermarkets everywhere stocking over-priced, over sugared, chemical laden granola, making your own is a much cheaper and healthier alternative.... and so so simple to do!

To be honest, whenever I make granola I usually just wing it....I put in whatever we have to hand; raisons, currents, dried mango, banana chips, pecans, walnuts  (dare I tell you erm...chopped up chocolate pieces!) without giving much attention given to quantities.
However, today I did make note of what we put in and this evening I quickly wrote it out as a recipe sheet which I have uploaded onto Scribd to make it easy to read on your ipad or tablet in the kitchen...if you don't have a mobile devise it should still work on a regular computer inshaAllah! (I think of scribd as a cheaper alternative to kindle!)
You can view this granola recipe over on Scribd {here}!

Granola recipe scribd
I've read a couple of ebooks on Scribd and as a reader, I found it great to use! But I've never used it to upload anything before, so this recipe sheet is my experiment to find out how it works!
I'd love to hear your feedback and let me know what you think of Scribd - I have a whole host of ideas I want to work on from fun kids activities and crafts through to home-school help!
So if my dear readers find scribd to be easy to use then it would be really exciting to plan some future projects around the Scribd format inshaAllah!

Okay, so I have digressed a little from todays post.....back to granola!

If you don't want to use Scribd, then here is the recipe we used today (with extra images!)

What you will need (approximately)
4 cups oats
2 tablespoons coconut oil
1/2 to 3/4 cup honey
1 cup mixed dried fruit of your choice

Granola recipe
Heat a pan on a medium heat and add approximately 2 tablespoons coconut oil and about half a cup of honey (I measured about 4 heaped wooden cooking spoons)
Depending on the strength of your honey you may need to add a little more or less.
Mix together until you have a nice runny liquid.

Granola recipe
Pour honey over 4 cups of oats in a mixing bowl (or you can add the oats to the pan).
Mix until well combined.
You can at this stage add your chopped nuts, however if you want greater nutritional value, make sure you buy them raw and add at the end after the oats have been baked!

Granola recipe
Line a large baking tray with baking paper and thinly spread the oat mix. If you have too much mixture for your tray, just grab another!
Put into the oven for approximetly 15 minutes.

Granola recipe
After 15 minutes take out and mix the oats.
Put back into oven for 5 minutes before bringing out and mixing again.

Granola recipe
Again, back into the oven for 5 minutes then bring out to mix.
Keep repeating this 5 minute bake and mix until your oats are all evenly golden brown.
They shouldn't be clumping together.
