The 5 Pillars of Islam activity with guided instructions for kids

We've started chapter 2 of the book "The Correct Creed for Children" which covers the 5 Pillars of Islam, the 6 Pillars of Iman and Ihsan.

The first part of the new chapter lists the 5 Pillars of Islam, and so last week we came up with this craft activity to show what they are before copying the text into our Islamic Studies books (see video below)

We are back again with more review material for the Conditions, pillars and requirements of prayer as explained in the Book authored by Shiekh Muhammad bin Abdil-Wahhaab, explained by Sheikh Muhammad Amaan al-Jaamee and Shiekh Abdul-Muhson al-Abbaad!

 

This worksheet style folder can be used as a simple introduction to the topic study, or used at the end of learning either as a review aid or to allow the student to demonstrate what they have learnt.

Each of the conditions, pillars and requirements are named and set out in a chart, with a blank space to give a short, brief explanation as to what each mean. By no means is this an extensive piece of work for the child to complete; its purpose is to allow just a short answer to show a basic comprehension.
You may like to allow your student(s) to copy a simple answer you write out first, however if they are older or show greater understanding, you may encourage them to complete the answers independently....use it in whichever way works for your family or individual child!

If you are a regular reader of this blog, you'll know by now that the folder is designed around fitting onto an A3 sheet of folded card (or 2 A4 cards taped together), with the cover on the front, and worksheet pages affixed to each of the remaining sides.

I like to use coloured card and trim the sheet edges to give a coloured boarder frame around each sheet, but by all means, you don't need to do that.

We have 2 options to choose from; girls or boys. The content is exactly the same in each, the only difference is the pictures.

We have been studying "An explanation of the conditions, pillars and requirements of prayer", an excellent book which helps give a depth of insight into salah, which I have found reading with my eldest child has helped to develop a greater connection and realisation of its importance beyond a series of actions and words.

We've taken inspiration from the family over at Growing in the Deen who produce some lovely presentation work, to produce this poster based upon the conditions, pillars and requirements of Salaah.

I've had to use my phone to take the pictures for this post instead of the digital camera so they haven't come out all that clear.
(just to note: the digital camera is only used for capturing non-animate subjects!)

We are currently using the book An explanation of the conditions, pillars and requirements of prayer to study together the details of salaah.
It is an excellent book which includes the original text in Arabic and its English translation, as well as explanations from both Shiekh Muhammad Amaan bin 'Alee al-Jaamee and Shiekh 'Abdul-Muhsin bin Hamad al-'Abbaad.

Its the same book we used a couple of years ago to produce the Sharoot of Salaah dodecahedron.

We used various craft papers to produce this poster of 3 flowers, with each flower naming each of the conditions, pillars and requirements on their leaves.

The conditions of the salaah are 9; and these must be present before the salaah beings.

1. Islam
2. Sanity
3. Reaching the age of Maturity (at-Tameez)
4. uplifting ritual impurity
5. Removal of filth (from 3 things: body, clothes and place of prayer)
6. Covering the 'Awrah
7. Arrival of the proper time
8. Facing the Qiblah
9. Intention

The pillars of the salaah are 14; and if any of these are left out whether it be intentionally or due to forgetfulness, then the prayer is not valid.

1. Standing, if one has the ability to do so.#
2. The Opening Takbir
3. Reciting Surah al-Faatihah
4. Bowing (ruku)
5. Rising from bowing.
6. Prostrating on all seven limbs (The forehead which includes the nose, both hands, knees and tip-toes of both feet.)
7. Erecting oneself from it.
8. Sitting between the two prostrations
9. Remaining tranquil (not rushing) during all of these pillars
10. Maintaining the sequential order.
11. The final Tashahhud.
12. Sitting for it.
13. Sending salaat of the Prophet.
14. The final two Tasleems.

 The Requirements of the salaah are 8; if any of the requirements are left out intentionally, then the prayer is invalid due to being abandoned, however if they are missed due to forgetfulness then the prayer is still valid but one must perform the extra prostrations for forgetfulness at the end of the prayer.

1. All of the takbeers except the Opening Takbir
2. Saying "Subhanna Rabee al-'Adheem" (Perfect is my Lord, the Most Great) while bowing.
3. Saying "Sami'a Allahu liman hamidahu" )Allah hears the one who praises Him) - this applies to the one leading the prayer and the one praying alone.
4. Saying "Rabbanaa wa lakal-hamd" (Our Lord to You belongs the Praise) - this applies to everyone.
5. Saying "Subhaana Rabbee al-A'alaa" (Perfect is my Lord, the Most High) while prostrating.
6. Saying "Rabb ighfir lee" (My Lord, forgive me) while sitting in between prostrations.
7. The final Tashahhud
8. Sitting for it.

The Shuroot of Salaah are 9: Giant dodecahedron!

Some of you reading this may not be home-schoolers, and alhamdulillah that's okay! As parents, we know that a lot of the "teaching" doesn't go on in schools, but happens in the home!

One of the nice things about teaching your own children, whether you home educate them or not, is that you have the freedom to allow your little brood to be creative and use their imagination giving them opportunity to be more engaged in the subject activity, perhaps more so than school's have time or resources to allow.
And as most of us want to ensure our children receive a good, sound Islamic education inshaAllah, many of us teach our children this with or without "school".

Something which every single Muslim parent has an obligation to teach their children, is the salaah. How and where your kiddos "do school" is irrelevant, teaching our children to pray is a command we must follow.

The question we need to ask is, is teaching our children the words and actions of the salaah enough? What about teaching them the things which make their salaah invalid or deficient? Its important to know these things to ensure we don't fall into them inshaAllah. If we perform the most beautiful salaah with near perfection, but haven't completed the wudu correctly, what happens to that beautifully made prayer? I don't need to tell you right!

If you missed our previous post, we began working through  An explanation of the conditions, pillars and requirements of prayer, making a small lift-the-flap-poster, to form a simple introduction to the shuroot of salaah.

To ensure the kids have a reasonable basic understanding of these shuroot, we went over them again, this time in a little more detail, and with a fun twist......instead of just writing them out in a book, we put together a dodecahedron, with each shart on a different face!

Having something so visual allows the kids to view their finished work on display, and should encourage them to pick it up, read and revise, so its clear in their minds inshaAllah.

To put it together is very simple, print onto card (or print paper and stick ontop of card) cut out the circle, score the lines around the pentagon to fold, forming tabs, stick these tabs together! The tabs can be either folded inside the dodecahedron so are not viewable, or as we've done here, decorate them and stick facing out!

Shuroot of Salaah flip poster

Teaching our children salaah is one the most fundamental basics we as parents must pass on. But are we aware of what conditions we must meet before we even begin our salaah in order for it to be accepted? Are we aware of the pillars and requirements during the salaah, the absence of which leaves the salaah null and void?

An excellent book to read is An explanation of the conditions, pillars and requirements of prayer, by Shiekh Muhammad bin 'Abdil-Wahhaab, explained by Sheikh Muhammad Amaan al-Jaamee and Shiekj 'Abdul-Muhson al-'Abbaad.

This is an excellent book to go through together with our children inshaAllah.

The opening of the treaties begins with the 9 shuroot (conditions) of the salaah. To help relay this to my children, we discussed briefly these conditions, before completing a flip-poster sheet to stick into an excersise book.
