5 weeks of Arabic alphabet lapbooks!

Alhamdulillah today we are sharing the first in a five-part series of Arabic alphabet lapbooks!

Over the next 5 weeks we'll upload a new lapbook to complete the full alphabet bi'ithnillah!

To help the similar looking letters be grouped together, the letter alif has been placed in the final lapbook rather than the first (so don't panic....alif is not missing!)

 - I know some of you may have preferred the letters to be in alphabetical order, however I found that by placing alif at the end, it allows the similar looking letters to be grouped together in separate lapbooks, which should help the child to learn how to distinguish between the sometimes very small differences inshaAllah.

This first lapbook covers letters ba to kha.

I'm using a file-folder which opens out - so the cover has been cut into 2 and each piece affixed to each opening flap.

The complete lapbook laid out.

Each letter has its own mini-book which is simply folded accordion style and stuck into place.

It includes a letter colour-in cover, a word example beginning with the letter and a letter trace page.

The final part is a simple alphabet colouring page with tashkeel (vowel markings)

I suggest that when you ask your child to colour this sheet in, you may find it helpful to encourage the use of 3 different colours - one colour for each of the separate vowel markings. For example, all the fathas perhaps in blue, all the kessrahs in pink and all the dummahs in yellow.....whatever colours your child likes. By separating each vowel into one colour it may help the child to recall the sound each makes (ah ee oo).

Free Home School Binder printables for home, home school and blog!

A home management binder seems a little extreme at first thought.... I mean, we all know what we need to do right? Wash the dishes, do the laundry, cook dinner....its not exactly rocket science is it!

Alhamdulillah, whilst running a home certainly is not rocket science, being organised can make doing so a lot more efficient and easier....especially for those of us who have home-schooling thrown into the mix!

In my own desperate attempts at improving my own home management skills, I discovered the world of binder printables! Some of you may already be familiar with these, especially if you are over in the USA because it seems to be something quite popular across the Atlantic!

Upon further research, I've noticed that many productive people, often have some kind of planning method in place to help organise their thoughts and time. It of course doesn't have to take the form of a fancy binder, however, if you are looking to have something which would help to inspire and keep you working towards goals and use time more productively inshaAllah, then a management binder may help.

When using a binder, bare in mind that what you write down is not written in stone! Some days things may come up which is not on your plan....so go with it and don't panic! The idea is just to help general productivity, and "brain-dump" all your to-dos onto paper so that you don't have to keep thinking about them!
Even if you only achieve 80% of things from your planning 80% of the time....you'll see a huge improvement in your productivity and time-management inshaAllah! (well, that's my theory anyway!)

So here is my version.... something I put together to help mentally organise to-dos, including home-school and blog planning printables.

I've uploaded each of the binder elements separately, to make it easier for you to download what you need if you don't need all the printables included.

I highly recommend getting the Better Binder from Staples....they come in a wide range of colours and have a protective pouch on the front to allow you to insert your own cover as well as an insert for the spine. (they are cheaper online than in the store though...we showed in store the online price and they matched it Alhamdulillah, or you can just order online and get delivered free to pick up from the store).

The computer is sick!

Alhamdulillah we have a lot of new ideas to bring to the blog over the coming months inshallah!
It was intended to begin this week.......however our plans will have to be put on hold for a couple of weeks as our computer has got some kind of virus so it will be going in for repair, and next week we're away visiting family inshaAllah!

I'm going abit organiser crazy this week as I prepare for starting "school" next week inshaAllah following our long break!

I'm putting together a complete Home Organising Binder inshaAllah which will be jam packed full of helpful tools to organise both home and homeschool inshaAllah, as I am tired of always feeling I have a million things to do and just never know where to start!

Saum in Ramadan is one of the 5 pillars mobile

I had been planning to make available a Ramadan bulletin board, however we didn't get it completed before the start of Ramadan, so the kids and I will be working on it throughout the month inshaAllah.
Bi'ithnillah it will be available to download next year!!!
However, in the mean time, I thought I'd share some small elements which could be used by themselves.
Today, I have uploaded this activity which can be used to make a hanging mobile, or stuck onto a nice piece of coloured paper and made into a poster....or however you like!

What to do when everyone else is starting school?

So, you made the decision to home-educate.... and then you see all the children starting school... a hot wave of self-doubt rushes through your veins as you question if home schooling really the right thing to do?

You listen to your family and friends gush about how well their child is doing at school, how their teacher seems to get the best out of them, how amazing the projects are that they work on, how nice the friends that they picked are.... it sounds like a fairy-tale....its certainly enough to burst your little home-school bubble and the image of a tiny, grim child-prison you pictured as being the place these folk call "school".

So what do you do when everyone is starting school?

Writing mini-office

In an attempt to improve writing skills, this basic Writing Mini-Office has been designed to help prompt and remind younger writers of some key writing basics inshaAllah!

It is not a learning tool, but rather allows students to recap already learnt basic fundamentals whilst writing!

So if your child needs to be reminded to add their capital letters and full-stops, to check spelling and basic punctuation, then this is for you!

Just print out onto thin card and laminate, or stick onto strong cardstock, before taping together the sides to produce a professional looking tri-fold mini-office!

My printing tips:

I always suggest printing onto thin card when laminating, as it gives a smoother final finish and also will give you a stronger tri-fold stand inshaAllah!
 I find when laminating paper, the sheet will be noticeably weaker and tends to bend slightly- which is fine if you are laminating something to go on the wall for example, but as we are wanting this to stand, thin card gives a much more professional and stronger final finish.

If thin card is not available to you, then I would recommend printing onto good quality strong paper.
Whether you choose to laminate your mini-office pages or stick them onto strong card-stock instead, a stronger paper quality will help to prevent wrinkles when laminated or when glue is applied!

Madina Arabic vocab tool!

learn Madina Arabic Vocab Free online tool!

If you are going through the Madina Arabic course, whether with a teacher or through self-study, the biggest challenge is learning the vocab!

You can do it the old fashioned way and make your own flash-cards or you can try out the many free online tools designed to help you memorise words and facts bi'ithnillah!

The particular online tool I am introducing you to today, I have found to be a great learning aid Alhamdulillah in my Arabic studies and the best thing is it is absolutely free to use!

So what exactly is it?
Its a website called Memrise.com and as the name suggests, its a memory aid tool which can be accessed online or by downloading the ipad app.

Its a very nicely designed site and works on a seed to flower concept ....each word starts as a "seed", as you learn the word you "plant it", as you revise you "water" and once learnt, its a "flower".

Now, let me explain how it can help you learn the Madina Arabic vocab inshaAllah....

First of all, you will have to go to the Madina Arabic course on Memorise. { click here }

You will see a series of levels with an image of a little flower in grey - once you complete a level the flower is coloured.

 

 You will go into each level and see the vocab list for that lesson. Just click on "start planting" to start learning the vocab!

 

 

 

You will be shown the Arabic word and its meaning, for which you can choose an image or text that you can associate with that word to help you remember it inshaAllah.



 

 The program will then keep showing you each word and asking you to either write or match the meaning with the Arabic. If you keep getting it incorrect, it will continue to bring up that particular word until you have got it!

 

 

Once you have locked the vocab into your memory inshaAllah, the program will at regular intervals of hours, days, weeks or months bring  up "old vocab" to ensure you haven't forgotten it inshaAllah, and if you make a mistake, then it will automatically bring it back to revise to return it back to your memory bi'ithnillah!

 Warning: I do not advise you to allow your children to use this without supervision as when selecting an image, the tool brings up all images found on the web (which if not carefully searched could potentially show inappropriate images - it works in the same way as searching for images via google images: you type the search word, and it will bring up related content)
