Learning Arabic with kids (plus list of online resources)

Learning Arabic with kids. includes a list of online free arabic learning resources

For non-Arabic speakers, building up Arabic vocabulary with our children is something which may feel unnatural to begin with as new words and phrases are introduced. But with practice and use, they will soon roll off our tongues without any thought inshaAllah.

It simply takes time, practice, patience and the belief that growing our language skills will one day pay off and will become second nature bi'ithnillah.

People learn second languages all the time. The difficulty we have in the West when learning Arabic, is we are not often in situations where we are forced to speak it, so we don't. We're learning to understand and speak Arabic in a non-Arabic speaking country so its too easy to stay within our comfort zones and not try...even when we meet an Arabic speaking sister at the masjid.

LearnArabic.com review!

learn arabic .com review
Alhamdulillah I was granted an opportunity to try out the courses over at LearnArabic.com, and thought that some of you may find benefit in finding out a little more inshaAllah!

Due to ill health over the past couple of months I haven't used the site as much as I had wanted to; however, from what I have used; I feel that I would be prepared to spend money on using it in the future!

So lets start at the beginning and ask, what exactly is LearnArabic.com?
As if you couldn't already tell from the name, its a specialist site designed to help learners acquire the basics in Arabic language as well as offering a superb separate online Tajweed course!

I know from my own experience as an adult learner of Arabic and the difficulties I faced, if I had access to this sort of resource, things would have likely been a lot easier for me in the beginning!

It has been designed so that both children and adults alike can learn inshaAllah - and if you are completely new to Arabic, there is no need to fret, because you will learn the alphabet and move on up from there inshaAllah!
Even those who already know the alphabet and can read, you will find benefit in these first lessons because they go over in detail the correct makhaarij (places of letter origin in pronunciation).

So how does it all work?
The site uses a variety of resources to help you learn - from extremely well presented video lessons, to quizzes and games to help you learn and develop your memory bi'ithnillah.

The video lessons I personally feel, are the best thing about this site, and most unique to it! They are beautifully designed with such simplicity, that they are easy to follow and comprehend Alhamdulillah.

The teacher uses the screen as his board (pictured screen shot below) when teaching, so it feels as though you are attending a live class with a real teacher in front of you.

I've tried a few different lessons to learning Arabic in the past, and by far, this is the most superior to what I have tried from both online and physical classes. I am a very visual person, so for me, if I had learnt in this way, I feel I would have found learning much easier wa Allahu Alam.
Its also great that you can stop and pause the class to write your notes or go back and replay sections you didn't quite understand first time round.

The current lessons available, will take you from learning the alphabet, through to forming simple sentences, plurals and verb conjugation - which is a great start if you haven't learnt Arabic before.

However, if you have already reached that stage, and are looking to further progress your language understanding, you may find that you already know what the site currently is offering.

I believe new lessons are continuing to be added, and if they are able to go ahead and complete a full set of videos teaching all the language rulings to give full language comprehension, this would be a totally amazing and unique self-study course unlike any other!

So, if you are new to the language, I highly recommend the course, because it will give you a solid base from which you can continue to progress your Arabic studies inshaAllah. - its something which would be great to do as a family together with the kids!
(I strongly believe that if we truly want to learn the Arabic language, we must strive to learn it with our families and implement what we learn together inshaAllah)

Separate to the Arabic language classes, is a Tajweed course based upon the work of Shaykh, Doctor, Ali bin 'Abdir-Rahmaan al-Hudhayfee (Imaam of al-Masjid al-Nabawi, al-Madinah al-Nabawiyyah).
learn arabic .com tajweed review
Naturally, self-study does not take the place of learning in the presence an actual teacher, however, it is not always possible to find one. I know from my own past experience, when I begun practicing Islam maybe about 13 years ago, in a town where there were no Muslims other than us, that finding a teacher can be impossible!
I know there are many new Muslims, who for years do not learn how to read the Qur'an, mainly because of this difficulty in not being able to find a teacher - so something like this is extremely beneficial Alhamdulillah.
Also, for those who may have been reading the Qur'an since childhood Alhamdulillah, there is a great deal of benefit to these classes, which take you from firstly, being taught the virtues of the Qur'an and understanding the importance of Tajweed and its meaning through to perfecting your makhaarij and all the individual rulings.

Again, like the Arabic language course, this is simple and clear and I highly recommend it, whether you are a complete beginner or have been reading for years. It will help you to improve your understanding inshaAllah which in turn, will help you to perfect your recitation bi'ithnillah.

I have to say I have benefited greatly from these tajweed classes Alhamdulillah - I like the ability to pause to write my notes, and replay!
I haven't completed them all yet, so I will most likely be subscribing inshaAllah, and believe it is money well spent bi'ithnillah - I think it works out at around just £4 a month for a 6-month sign up, so it is affordable for most alhamdulillah.

It has to be said, as with any class or course you take, effort is required from you. You will only get out of a class what you are prepared to put in.
The benefit of online classes, is you can do them in your own time, and at your own pace; moving on when you are ready. You can pause the recording as often as you like to write your notes or go back and repeat what you didn't quite understand.

So, if you are interested and would like to find out more, please do check out LearnArabic.com!

Learning Arabic? ...a few online resources to check out...

arabic resources online, worksheets and printables
Alhamdulillah there are some great Arabic learning resources available online.....here is a small list of a few I have come across.

free arabic curriculum
Some nice printable resources for children to help teaching Arabic - you'll find stories, colouring pages and themed vocabulary curriculum.

madina arabic online
If you are learning the Madina Arabic books, this is a useful site to help you, with audio sounds, and end of chapter quizzes!

madina arabic vocab
A free online resource which helps you to learn the Madina Arabic vocab bi'ithnillah.
-note this site offers courses on virtually anything and everything....so I am not recommending this whole site, rather this particular course.

arabic worksheets for kids
I came across this resource quite recently so I have only skimmed through it - however it looks a great addition to the Madina Arabic Reader books (The Madina Arabic course in a child-friendly version).
It is packed full of extra colourful lessons to help practice the vocab and grammar understanding all presented in a nice simple and colourful format.
I don't know anything about this site, but this particular resource looks hugely beneficial inshaAllah.

arabic prinatable resources
Lots of nice kids learning resources available for your to print at home.

arabic printables
The Taalibideen Jr family of websites offer great education resources!
I think right now the Arabic site is not available I assume for maintenance, but I have linked the Islamic Studies site which has a link to its Arabic sister site in the menu bar so inshaAllah, when its back online it will be easy for you to find.

learn to read arabic free
A huge series of step by step video lessons, which start from learning the alphabet up to rules of reading the Qur'an.
I have included this site in the list, because I know there are many parents who have come to Islam as adults and are learning Arabic inshaAllah.
While this site does not substitute the role of having a real teacher, it is a great help for those who perhaps can not find a teacher easily or want to have extra independent practice.
I don't know who is behind this site and what they are upon, however from what I can see this free resource is just helping you to learn to read the Qur'an with some rules bi'ithnillah.

*13/04/15:
Here are 2 more sites I've come across, but haven't got time to put them into graphic images!

An excellent resource teaching Arabic grammar right from the beginning in a series of easy to follow readable lessons.

This isn't a free site, but I have tried it and it is unlike any other Arabic teaching website. Read my review for full details in this post inshaAllah.

Madina Arabic vocab tool!

madina arabic vocab
learn Madina Arabic Vocab Free online tool!
If you are going through the Madina Arabic course, whether with a teacher or through self-study, the biggest challenge is learning the vocab!

You can do it the old fashioned way and make your own flash-cards or you can try out the many free online tools designed to help you memorise words and facts bi'ithnillah!

The particular online tool I am introducing you to today, I have found to be a great learning aid Alhamdulillah in my Arabic studies and the best thing is it is absolutely free to use!

So what exactly is it?
Its a website called Memrise.com and as the name suggests, its a memory aid tool which can be accessed online or by downloading the ipad app.

Its a very nicely designed site and works on a seed to flower concept ....each word starts as a "seed", as you learn the word you "plant it", as you revise you "water" and once learnt, its a "flower".

Now, let me explain how it can help you learn the Madina Arabic vocab inshaAllah....

First of all, you will have to go to the Madina Arabic course on Memorise. { click here }

You will see a series of levels with an image of a little flower in grey - once you complete a level the flower is coloured.

You will go into each level and see the vocab list for that lesson. Just click on "start planting" to start learning the vocab!

madina arabic vocab

You will be shown the Arabic word and its meaning, for which you can choose an image or text that you can associate with that word to help you remember it inshaAllah.

madina arabic vocab

The program will then keep showing you each word and asking you to either write or match the meaning with the Arabic. If you keep getting it incorrect, it will continue to bring up that particular word until you have got it!

Once you have locked the vocab into your memory inshaAllah, the program will at regular intervals of hours, days, weeks or months bring  up "old vocab" to ensure you haven't forgotten it inshaAllah, and if you make a mistake, then it will automatically bring it back to revise to return it back to your memory bi'ithnillah!

So if you want to check it out for yourself, click the link { here }

Warning: I do not advise you to allow your children to use this without supervision as when selecting an image, the tool brings up all images found on the web (which if not carefully searched could potentially show inappropriate images - it works in the same way as searching for images via google images: you type the search word, and it will bring up related content)

Great online Arabic reading series!

If you are looking for an Arabic reading series to help your children read and learn the Arabic language inshallah, then be sure to check out Omar and Maryam!

Alhamdulillah I found out about this site through an email and although I haven't checked the whole site back to back, what I have seen looks pretty good subhanAllah.....and it is totally free!!!!

As you can see though, it does contain pictures - so we should be cautious and explain to our children that the picture making is haram.

The series is just like any English reading book set, in that the first books are very basic, with only a few words which are repeated often! As the books go up in levels, so does the number of words and difficulty.

It includes an audio feature to help with pronunciation, and each time new vocab is introduced it has its full vowelation markings (harakat), the markings are then dropped after a couple of uses.

At the end of each book are a couple of quizzes which help to solidify vocab understanding!

A really useful site for children and adults of all ages...just start at your reading / vocab level!

To help my children develop their reading and master the vocab inshallah, I've started to put together flashcards using the vocab in each book.
