Preparing Your Parenting For Ramadan Workshop

Parenting in Ramadan workshop

We often approach Ramadan having high aspirations of what we'll achieve with our family during this time; excited to share our anticipation before welcoming the sighting of the new moon.
It isn't long however before reality hits us when overwhelm, burnout and frustration show up, as we face the challenges that come with parenting and educating children while fasting. And that's when feelings of guilt, shame, and inadequacy rain down upon our shoulders, thinking we've taken on more than we could chew.

I often hear from mothers who feel inadequate because they find it difficult to manage their frustration and patience. They find it difficult to maintain energy while fasting. They find it difficult keeping up momentum and motivation. They have high aspirations, wanting to achieve amazing things with their family, and beat themselves up when feeling they fall short.

We don't often talk about the everyday struggles of parenting during Ramadan because we focus on its benefits. And because we don't talk about the struggles, it leaves many of us with those feelings of inadequacy when we feel we don't live up to what we hoped we would, thinking no one else shares the same difficulties we face.

What I want to do through this workshop, is share with you how you can prepare yourself to manage the everyday parenting and educating of your children through Ramadan, insha’Allah. To help you discover what is important for you and your family so you can focus on those things. And to give you some simple strategies to help when you feel overwhelm and fatigue creeping in and prodding at your patience.

Interactive Workshop

Being a parent is the most rewarding as well as the most important job you'll ever do in your life. It is also the most challenging. In this interactive 2 hour workshop, you will receive practical steps to aid your parenting confidence so you can prepare to make this Ramadan a productive and enjoyable experience with your children.

Together, we will explore through mentorship and a little coaching:
  • What really matters to you

Parenting workshop for muslim mums

I have some questions

When is the workshop?
Wednesday 7th April 10:30 am BST (UK time) and the recorded replay available shortly after

Where is the workshop?
The live session is on Zoom. The recorded replay will be viewed in our own private members-only portal.

What is the workshop fee?
The cost is just £20 inclusive of the workbook material and after-support care on Facebook.

Can men join?
The workshop is strictly for women only. By signing up you confirm that you are female and will attend the workshop (whether live or recorded) where men can not hear, or to use headphones.

I don't have Facebook
You won't need Facebook to attend the workshop or access the materials. However, if you would like to benefit from the temporary after-workshop community support offered, you will require a Facebook account so you might want to consider opening an account solely for the purpose of accessing this.

Can I share my workshop access?
Tickets are for one participant only. It is not permitted to share or sell your access or materials with others.

Will I receive any physical materials?
You will not receive any physical products. The workbook is a PDF and the workshop replay is streamed digitally online.

I don't homeschool, will I benefit from this workshop?
Yes! The main theme to the workshop is setting up mums to feel in control and manage all the emotions that come with having children home. I won't be able to help with school-specific problems (this is beyond the area of my expertise) but certainly, supporting you with the everyday challenges of raising children once they are back home is where you will benefit. If you want help with that, along with preparing to keep children distracted and busy outside of school, this workshop will do that for you, insha'Allah.

Are you teaching Islam in this workshop?
I am not a student of knowledge so I will not be teaching about Ramadan as a topic Rather, the workshop is around preparing you as a mother for the practical aspects of parenting children and managing your emotions and energy during this time.

I'm ready! Sign me up!

Create your Ramadan Action Plan with this fun family activity guide!

Ramadan Action Plan printable family activity guide

Following the pre-Ramadan prep planner, designed to help mums get organised; this week I'm sharing a set of guided activities for the whole family to come together on.

This short activity guide has been designed to help you figure out along with your family what is important to you all around Ramadan; giving you time to put things in place so that you can focus on what really matters bi'ithnillah.

Ramadan is the time of year where routines change and focus shifts. We look forward it, and many of us move things around so that our families can take as much benefit as we can from this time bi'ithnillah.

Yet despite our best intentions, it can be easy to get swept along and find ourselves lost in and amongst all our many responsibilities; struggling to find a balance between what we want to achieve over Ramadan and our everyday ordinary life.

Getting ready for Ramadan

get ready for ramadan - includes a free planner

Who else is excited for the approaching Ramadan? I love this time of year and always feel it comes at a much needed time where I feel in desperate need of a boost.

Something I like to do during this season, is get everything in order at home before Ramadan begins....or at least try to anyway. I will tell you I often still end up running around like a crazy person trying to get everything in place once the new moon announcement has been made (if you know the phrase last-minute-dot-com....well, that is me.)

However, I will generally try to get as much stuff done as I can ahead of time. I always feel I need to gut the house from top to bottom in the weeks approaching Ramadan's arrival; deep clean everywhere and have everything straightened out. I also like to get as much ready for E'id as I can, so that I'm not having to waste valuable time during Ramadan that could be better spent in ibaadah.

The 5 Pillars of Islam activity with guided instructions for kids

5 Pillars of Islam box activity - includes printable template and instruction guide for kids
We've started chapter 2 of the book "The Correct Creed for Children" which covers the 5 Pillars of Islam, the 6 Pillars of Iman and Ihsan.

The first part of the new chapter lists the 5 Pillars of Islam, and so last week we came up with this craft activity to show what they are before copying the text into our Islamic Studies books (see video below)

30 days of Ramadan ahadith to read aloud with your family!

30 days of Ramadan hadith - printable cards to read aloud daily throughout the month of Ramadan
I wanted something simple to use through-out Ramadan, that will help my family to pay attention to some of the benefits and practices of this month, whilst spending time together.

...And so from that thought, I've put together some simple little cards; one for each day of the month.
Each card shares a hadith relating to Ramadan that can be read as a family, pondered and discussed together, providing a nice short 5 minute daily activity inshaAllah.

Home schooling during Ramadan: what is a Mum to do?

Home schooling during Ramadan
Ramadan is weeks away, and for many of us, we start to wonder what shall we do about home schooling during this special month.

To give you my two cents, I think this will be something individual to each family, just as the general home school goings-on, day to day through out the year will differ from one house-hold to the next.

However, with that being said, this seems to be a hot topic of conversation at this time of year and so I thought I'd put a few pointers together to try to some-what answer this question.

Ramadan Reflections; the quick passing of time

Ramadan Reflections; the quick passing of time

The month of Ramadan has come and left us once again. It seems like only yesterday we were making our preparations for this blessed month and waking up at Sahur for our first fast.
It doesn't feel like 29 days have passed before us, it doesn't feel like we have fasted every one of those days or stood in prayer each night, SubhanAllah. How quickly this month has gone.

Kids Eid gifts on a budget

Finding a "budget" gift does not have to be valueless, rather the simple things are often the most precious. I'm pretty sure everyone will agree, gifts always mean more when they have been given with a lot of thought and love!

Now we are well into the last 10 days of Ramadan, and E'id is vast approaching, its nice to give small gifts to family and friends, however if your children have like 10 friends each.....don't panic! Gift shopping doesn't need to cut holes in your pockets!

Use your imagination, and make something personal, like these personalised pens! Take a budget packet of £1 pens (these are from Asda) and transform them into something pretty that your kids and their friends will love!

This is such a simple idea, but has such a great impact!
Get round the kitchen table with the kiddos and let them get involved making gifts for their pals!

I've used craft punches here for the scalloped edge, but they are not necessary, it would be just as effective to cut out a basic circle instead and still pull off the same look.

All you need to get started is...

A packet of budget pens, felt tip or pencils!
I do advise though, be wary of pound store packs if buying felt tips as they don't tend to last. These were just a £1 from Asda.

Craft punches if you have them....(and if not just use scissors to cut out a shape), double sided tape, thick card and sticky back foam. These come I think as a pack of 10 A4 sheets from certain pound stores.

Punch out the card to make the backing frame for your name.
Like I said, if you don't have a punch, just cut out a shape....circle, square, heart, whatever you like!

Measure the front label on the packet and cut the same size using the sticky foam.
Lay the foam on top of the label to cover, before adding the frame centrally with the double sided tape.
Print off names on the computer and lay in the centre of your frame!

That's it! Easy peezy lemon squeezey!

Ramadan Goal Planner!

Do you mentally have goals for what you would like to achieve each Ramadan, but don't always manage to fulfil them? Maybe you get side tracked, maybe you can never find the right time to fit your goals in, maybe you just don't know what you should do!

Writing out a rough plan won't guarantee you will act upon it, however, by putting your thoughts onto paper, it may help you to organise and plan out your day so that you can comfortably find a suitable time to action your Ramadan goals inshaAllah, whether that is reading Qur'an, dhikr, charitable deeds....whatever it is you want to achieve this Ramadan!

Think about what your daily schedule looks like during the week, we all have commitments that can not be ignored or neglected. So pen down those things first.
Maybe every Monday evening you have a class, every Friday afternoon you look after your sisters children......write these commitments down. By doing so you will have a better idea of where you can find undistracted free time to action your Ramadan goals.

Now, once you have all your regular commitments down, think about your goals, and when the best time will be to act on them inshaAllah. If you know the house is quiet straight after Fajr and you will have no distractions, maybe that is the best time to spend time with the Qur'an, or maybe you would find it easier in the evening after the kids have gone to bed until Maghrib comes.

You know your schedule, so think about what will be realistic for you. Ramadan is a month which we all want to achieve the best we can for the Pleasure of our Creator. A little forward planning can help you to go along way inshaAllah!

This years Ramadan Good Deed Tree!

A few days latter than planned, but we got there alhamdulillah! Finally got round to making this years Good Deed chart for Ramadan!
The past couple of years I have made a tree picture for the girls to add leaves for each good deed they do. I like to write on the leaf what it was the girls did or said.
Its nice because it makes me focus and recognise their good behaviour....which often gets overlooked! So from the smallest kind word to doing big actions to please Allah, it will be recorded and stuck up on the tree inshaAllah!

This year, I've made a big tree to stick up on the wall, about 1m tall from opening up a box. The kids added some glitter, and I punched heart shapes for the leaves! (thought would be cute!)

Good Deed Tree

Last year we made a small A3 size "Good Deed Tree", but after seeing friends efforts with their own trees MashAllah I thought this year we'd go up to A2. (one friend made one using 2x A2 sheets taped together....so that's A1 right? and another friend made a huge tree running up her wall MashAllah!).

Each time they perform a "good deed" they get a leaf to stick on the tree...sometimes I write what they have done on the leaf (if it is something extra-special) or for the other general and common good actions I will just leave it blank. They stick the leaves up themselves, which they really enjoy doing MashAllah.

I really have found the tree to be of great value to the kids....and myself to be honest! We are quick to point out, correct and discipline them when they misbehave, but are a bit less "alert" when it comes to the small good things which they do, the little deeds which tend to go un-noticed.....like picking something up without having to be asked ten times, or remembering to say a dua'a in a situation without a reminder and even playing nicely together without any squabbling!

The girls are noticing that I am praising them more in recognition for the "good" behaviour and actions they are exerting, rather than just gaining recognition for the misbehaviour's! And I have to admit, its encouraging them to avoid behaving in a non-pleasing manner and act with more goodness and kindness ta barak Allah, alhamdulillah!

I think this is a lesson to me....although we won't continue with the tree after Ramadan, I should make more effort to show appreciation and give them due credit for the good which they do inshallah.

Home made Ramadan banner

A "Ramadan" banner, again just to help the girls appriciate the Ramadan mood (they are young, 2 and 5). We glittered the letters yesterday and cut out, before sticking onto the moon / star sheets today. Taping string at the back ready to hang.

I tried to get as close to the banner as I can without clipping the letters .....most of this picture seems to be our kitchen table!!!!

Ramadan calander chain

This is a quick, simple and fun activity I did with K earlier today - A paper chain, each chain representing one day of the month of Ramadan (total 30 chains).

K wrote the numbers 1 - 30 on each link (good number sequence and writing practice) whilst I stapled them together. Once completed, we tacked it to the wall, ready to remove one link each day inshallah.

By the end of Ramadan there will be no links left inshallah, and the kids know it will be E'id inshallah!

This is great as it helps K to understand the concept of a "month" and its duration, and also stops her bugging me every day asking "when is it E'id, when is it E'id?????" because she can count the remaining days herself inshallah!

A variation on this activity, is rather than having a complete 30 day chain at the beginning of Ramadan, instead start with 1 link, adding a new link to the chain each day, so that by the end of Ramadan you will have a decoration ready for E'id.

I prefer removing a link each day though rather than adding links to the chain, as I think it helps them to visualise how long the month is (as they have the 30 day chain as the beginning point).
I also like it as a small decoration marking the beginning of Ramadan as it helps the children get into the Ramadan mood inshallah, especially as they are so young.
